Justin Steele dominates again and Nick Madrigal redeems himself after ‘bonehead’ mistake in Chicago Cubs’ 10-1 win Nick Madrigal and Christopher Morel Madrigal found themselves in manager David Ross’s doghouse Thursday night after head-scratching bunt attempts in the Chicago Cubs’ 3-1 loss to the Philadelphia Phillies. But Ross doesn’t stay mad for long, as he explained Friday morning before a 10-1 win over the Cleveland Guardians.“When the players mess up, there has to be a moment of learning and an expectation to be better,” Ross said. “If the pattern continues, then you have to do something about it. I have three kids, and when they mess up and they know the mess up and they’re already upset, I don’t think it betters the person in the learning experience by continuing to come down on them.”Madrigal and Morel responded with sixth-inning home runs Friday as the Cubs snapped a four-game losing streak and helped the crosstown White Sox, who are chasing the Guardians in the American League Central.Justin Steele threw 6 1/3 shutout innings, impro...

Are open houses no longer relevant in a post-pandemic world? In 2002, 16% of homebuyers identified their new homes by attending an open house. The National Association of Realtors 2022 Profile of Home Buyers and Sellers report shows that two decades later that number plummeted to 4%.The coronavirus pandemic further solidified the declining popularity of open houses as more buyers turn to online searches to find their dream homes.Data from the report states only 5% of buyers frequently use open houses, while 23% occasionally do and 72% rarely do.Furthermore, when asked if an open house is a valuable source of information during a home search, only 10% say they’re very useful, whereas 22% say somewhat useful, and 68% state they aren’t useful.Britta Nancarrow with West + Main says it may be time to end the practice.“Unless you can advertise them well, open houses may not generate much traffic,” she says. “The era of just putting up the garage sale style sign is over.”Esperanza Wardroup with West + Main says ha...

What Colorado student loan borrowers should do after Supreme Court’s rejection of debt cancellation Kelsey Lesco, Colorado’s student loan ombudsperson, said the 796,900 Coloradans with federal student loan debt who are wondering what to do following the U.S. Supreme Court’s rejection of President Joe Biden’s plan to cancel or reduce federal student debt for millions should start by following a few simple steps.1. Borrowers should identify who their student loan servicers are, Lesco said. During the pandemic when many student loan payment plans were paused, Lesco said about 10 million borrowers had their loans transferred to a new servicer. To figure out which servicer their loans belong to, borrowers can go to studentaid.gov.2. Make sure your contact information is up to date with your borrower and the Federal Student Aid Office of the U.S. Department of Education. Borrowers can expect updates from the federal office and the loan servicer with important information regarding loans, so Lesco said it’s crucial to provide correct mailing or email addresses.3. ...

California bacon law takes effect

California bacon law takes effect A California law approved by voters that promises to get breeding pigs out of narrow cages that prevent them from standing or turning will finally take effect Saturday, after years of delays and warnings that the rules could lead to price spikes and pork shortages. But it will be six months before California grocery shoppers can be sure that pork chops they buy under the new law will be from a pig whose mother wasn’t confined in a so-called gestation crate. That’s because while the U.S. Supreme Court upheld the law, the state recently agreed to allow pork slaughtered before July 1 to be sold in California markets and restaurants for the rest of the year. That decision gives farmers and grocery stores time to adjust. But it's exasperating to supporters of the new rules that the effective implementation of the law would again be delayed — four years after voters approved it.
