ST. LOUIS - It's time for the annual tax-free, back-to-school weekend shopping event.School supplies will be exempt from sales taxes starting Friday through Sunday.“The shoes and the backpacks and the clothing items – things that everyone is going to need,” Sean Phillips, senior marketing director for the West County Center, said.The tax-free holiday kicks off for the back-to-school shopping season, giving customers a chance to shop all the deals and save.“This is a great opportunity for everyone to save money because as you know, when you make purchases here at the mall, the tax is around 10%,” Phillips said. “So if you are buying a computer that’s $2,000, you’ll save that $200 in tax.”West County, Mid Rivers, and South County malls are taking part. ST. PETERS, Mo. – There’s a limited edition, barrel pick bourbon honoring St. Louis area Marine Lance Cpl. Jared Schmitz, who was killed during the Aug. 26, 2021, U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan. Mostly sunny blue sky conditions over metro Denver on Wednesday will become cloudier as thunderstorms roll off the mountains and across Colorado’s Interstate 25 urban corridor in the afternoon, according to the National Weather Service.These scattered storms could be severe, producing heavy rain and hail, weather service forecasters said. Meteorologists estimated the likelihood of rain at 50%, decreasing later in the week. Flash flooding is possible, though not as likely as earlier this week, forecasters said.Any storms likely will hit after 2 p.m. and then diminish. Police are searching for a suspect involved in a pair of car-to-car shootings overnight that closed the 60 freeway in Diamond Bar and left one person dead in Costa Mesa. The first shooting was reported around 11:30 p.m. in Diamond Bar when someone opened fire on a pickup truck near Diamond Bar Boulevard.The driver pulled over with his family and called authorities.Authorities investigate a possible shooting in Diamond Bar on Aug. 1, 2023. King tides are continuing to impact the Orange County coast, with abnormally high water levels causing flooding in Huntington Beach.King tides, "exceptionally high tides" that strike three or four times a year, hit at about 9:40 p.m. Tuesday and are expected again at about 10:40 p.m. Wednesday, the city said on Twitter. "Due to King Tides, our Public Works crews will be mobilized to monitor for dry weather flooding along some streets in Huntington Harbour & Sunset Beach," officials added. U.S. auto safety regulators have opened yet another investigation into safety problems with Tesla vehicles.This time the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration is looking into a dozen complaints about loss of steering control or loss of power steering in the 2023 Models 3 and Y electric vehicles.The probe covers an estimated 280,000 vehicles. Five drivers alleged in complaints they couldn’t steer the vehicles at all.
